Meet the Founder
Dr. Stephanie Yvette Owens: A Lifelong Advocate for Education and Inclusion
Dr. Stephanie Yvette Owens is a distinguished educator, administrator, and entrepreneur with over 30 years dedicated to empowering students, particularly those with disabilities. Her passion stems from personal experience as the mother of a son with intellectual and physical disabilities and transforming her family’s journey into a lifelong ministry of advocacy.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in Florida, Dr. Owens earned her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Bethune-Cookman College in 1992. She advanced through advanced degrees, including a Master of Science in Specific Learning Disabilities (1999), Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership (2001), Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership (2008) from Nova Southeastern University, and a Reading Endorsement from Beacon College (2014). These qualifications fueled her transition from criminal justice to education.
Pioneering Career in Education
Dr. Owens began in corrections and juvenile justice before becoming a teacher and coach in 1996. She taught ESE subjects across grades 7-12 and coached varsity sports, earning Coach of the Year in soccer (2004). At Volusia County Schools (2006-2023), she served as teacher, administrator on assignment, STEM coordinator, and ESE Department Chair, analyzing data for academic gains and facilitating IEPs.
As Assistant Principal (2017-2023), she manahed 300-400 students, in addition to 230+ with disabilities, oversaw compliance, master scheduling, staff evaluations, and professional development on MTSS and behavior interventions. Since 2023, she has been a Learning Specialist at Daytona State College, supporting students in a multi-task environment.
Entrepreneurial Ventures and Community Impact
An entrepreneur at heart, Dr. Owens owned Stephanie Owens’ Cleaning Service (2005-2007) and tutored adults at Redland Migrant Christian Association (2001-2006). She leads Step Forward Initiatives Inc (501(c)(3)), Divine Fashions and Designs, LoLo’s Sweet-Cakes and Catering LLC, and Trademark Events, blending business acumen with community service like award-winning food pantries.
Her volunteer work includes church leadership, Special Olympics coaching, and UNCF ambassadorship, reflecting her commitment to self-improvement and rural health projects.
Awards and Recognitions
Dr. Owens has received the ESE Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year (2021), Life Changer of the Year (2016 nationally), Crystal Apple Award (2013) Johanna Knox Volunteer of the Year award (2014), and multiple nominations, alongside “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” (2005-06). These honors celebrate her transformative impact on students and staff.
Personal Mission and Legacy
Education is Dr. Owens’ ministry, touching countless lives as shared in reflections on students like Nick, who grew under her guidance. A Zeta Phi Beta member and skilled in MS Office, arbitration, and fundraising.

We founded Stepforward Initiatives Inc. to address a critical need throughout Flagler County, Volusia County, and surrounding areas—providing comprehensive transition support that prepares young people with disabilities for meaningful, independent adult lives. Our vision centers on creating a world where every young person, ages 14–21, is empowered to take bold steps toward their future through learning, growth, and positive change.
Over the years, we've built strong partnerships with families, schools, and employers throughout the community, creating a network of support that extends far beyond our programs.
From the coastal neighborhoods near the Intracoastal Waterway to the growing residential communities across Flagler County, Volusia County, and nearby areas, we understand the unique opportunities and challenges facing young adults in our region. Our programs reflect the diverse needs of students preparing for careers in our thriving local economy.
